What A Difference A Year Makes

A lot can happen in a year.

If you think about it, the 365 (or 366) days that make up an entire year offers us quite a long period of time. It contains endless amounts of different events and situations, that may be major, minor, positive, negative, joyous, upsetting, life-changing, or just a normal occurrence. How often do we stop on any given day and reflect on where were a year ago?

Many of us, myself included, use the new year as a time to reflect on our lives over the last calendar year. There is nothing wrong with this routine, but we need to become more mindful and consistent with practicing this self-reflection on a daily basis. From the short term perspective, it’s extremely important, and necessary for self-growth, to continuously reflect on yesterday, last week, or even last month. At the same time, I feel that it’s equally important to dedicate time and mental space to reflect on your life within the last year.

Like I said, a year is a long time, which gives us a broader scope and bigger sample size of where we were, what we were doing, and everything that has happened leading up to the present moment. No one is the same person they were a year ago. We all change, hopefully for the better with self-evolution, but sometimes we may digress or take a few steps back. Regardless of this, we have to understand that we are still here, we are still alive, and we have the ability to make this moment the moment we decide to change. We can use what we’ve learned in the last year as starting point and motivation to better ourselves. To live better, love better, care better, eat better, and ultimately, feel better. That way, when we look back on this day a year from now, we can be proud of the transformation we made from where we were then to where we are now. On this day. In this moment.
